Tips and Tricks: Camping with a Dog

  1. Many dog-friendly campsites offer four-legged care: Either at the reception or along the paths between the pitches you will usually find free bags or garbage bags to properly dispose of the business of your faithful companion. Dog food is often offered in the site's own store. "What a peasant does not know, he does not eat?" In this case, you should remember to pack a sufficient amount of the usual dog food in the camper. In front of the restaurant or even in front of the sanitary facilities, dog-friendly places have a dog bowl with some water ready to go.

  2. Dog toilets or showers are still no basic equipment on camp sites. However, on particularly dog-friendly sites they can be found by campers ever more frequently.

  3. As gladly as dogs are seen and heard on many campsites, a leash compulsion prevails in most places. To prevent problems and not have your vacation ruined, campers with dogs should follow this rule and keep the dog leashed on the campground. On enclosed open spaces your faithful companion can romp, play and jump as much as he likes even without a leash. Certain campgrounds also offer fenced-in lots so your dog can romp freely around the camper or caravan. In some countries there also is a muzzle requirement for dogs on the campsite.

  4. Your dog is not welcome at every beach section or lake. At the sea you should look for signposted areas for the romping of your four-legged friend. Dog owners may be fined for breaking the rules.

  5. Long trailing leashes and a hook on the ground or other fastening possibilities at the pitch are to be considered on the packing list for the vacation. This will keep your four-legged friend safely with you at the site while you read a book without worry or listen to the sound of the ocean waves. Plots with small hedges should be preferred over more open sites when camping with a dog, to not disturb the peace and privacy neighbors may desire.

  6. Observe the house rules of the campground that may be applicable for your dog. Do not let your four-pawed pet "do the business" on the campground. Campground rules ensure peaceful coexistence.

  7. Find out in advance if dogs are tolerated on the campsite especially at the time you want to go on vacation. In some cases, dogs are not allowed in the peak season. Likewise, you should make sure that the four-legged friends are welcome at the accommodation of your choice. In some rental accommodations dogs are forbidden. Also, distinctions are often made between overnight stays in the tent and in the own vehicle. You can find more exact information and the contact to the Campingplatz in each case on camping.info detail sides of the campsites. Other campers who have already been there with a dog have also given a rating for suitability with dog.

  8. Do not choose a pitch in the middle of the action at the campsite. So that your dog can do his business quickly and easily - and not on the neighbors' awning - it is a good idea to park the motorhome on a plot near the exit or on the edge of the campsite.

About Camping With a Dog

Where does the dog sleep when camping?

In order to get the dog used to the new environment while camping, it is advisable to have a familiar dog blanket or basket from home with you on your camping vacation. In the camper, camper or caravan you and your dog live in a smaller space. Nevertheless, dogs find a good place to sleep, under the table, on the driver's seat or in the bed, for example.

During the day you can also set up a fixed place, e.g. in the awning, for your dog. That way, your four-legged friend feels at home when camping and can enjoy the vacation with all the exciting activities in the fresh air just as much as you do.

Are dogs allowed on the campsite?

There is no clear "yes or no" answer and it depends on the campsite you want to visit. However, you can find dog-friendly campsites all over Europe. You can choose the best campsite out of more than 2,500 dog-friendly campsites all over Europe for you and your four-legged friend on camping.info.

On the camping.info detail pages of the respective campsite, campers who have already been there with their dog have given a rating between 0 and 5 stars for the suitability for dogs. Likewise, you will find information about the permission of dogs in bungalows / rental accommodations as well as in certain seasons. Here you should also inform yourself before arrival - sometimes dogs are only allowed in the low season, but not in the high season on campsites. On some sites, the four-legged friends are only allowed in the vehicle, but not in the tent.

Can dogs be left in the camper?

During the journey, your dog is in the camper with warmer outside temperatures with a car air conditioner in the best way. Alternatively, even an open window with a slight draft can help to a relaxed ride for dog and master. For longer trips, the dog should be protected from high sunlight on the way to the camping vacation and supplied with enough water.

Arrived at the pitch, it is important not to park the camper in blazing sun, if the four-legged friend should ever be left alone. Pitches in the shade are better suited for camping with a dog. Regular walks in nature or letting off steam on the beach make the camping vacation even better not only for the dog, but also for you.

How should I secure the dog in the camper?

By law, it is required to secure the four-legged friend well during the trip to the camping vacation with the dog, both in the car and in the camper. A precise regulation on how the dog must be secured in the vehicle, however, does not exist according to the StVO.

Most suitable is a fixed transport box in the rear of the vehicle. A non-fixed box is sufficient if you anchor it firmly so that the box cannot slip. There are also special safety belts for your dog, if you do not want to use a transport box.
