Great place to explore Hamburg
A beautifully landscaped, clean campground with spacious sites. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Public transportation access is great—there’s a bus stop at IKEA and a second one a short distance away. It takes about an hour to get to downtown.

Clean, but too expensive
We were only there for one night. The bathrooms were clean but showing their age. It doesn't justify the high price. It takes over an hour to get to Hamburg by public transportation.

The campground is ideal for a city tour of Hamburg.
Although it’s located right off the highway, you couldn’t hear much traffic noise.
The restroom facilities were clean.
Delicious bread rolls.
Very friendly staff.
Lots of trees, which made it quite quiet despite being near the highway, but also meant... little to no satellite reception.
As always at Knaus campsites, you need a long power cord.
There’s a beautiful sauna complex nearby (Bondenwald).
Using the HVV app makes getting around by public transit a breeze.

Check-in was friendly and efficient.
The front part of the campground is okay, but the back section—starting from the playground—is a nightmare.
The entire infrastructure needs to be overhauled. It’s absolutely essential to build paths and maintain the lawns. The paths to the restroom block are full... of holes and muddy, posing a risk of injury when walking. A second restroom block at the back is recommended.
As for the cleanliness of the restrooms, they are cleaned several times a day and are clean. This is a positive point.
The campsites themselves are unkempt and, due to overly dense tree cover, very dark and therefore always somewhat damp. I can accept the highway noise, as there is good public transportation access to downtown Hamburg. Earplugs are recommended.
The infrastructure for gray water and cassette toilets is good and clean.
Our overall impression led us to shorten our stay from 3 to 2 nights and leave early. This campsite relies mainly on through traffic and Hamburg’s weekend tourists.

A great place for a city trip
The restroom facilities are good. The condition of the grounds could be better. When it rains, the ground gets very soggy and muddy. The staff at the front desk are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Hello,
The campground is far from the city center—it takes 1 hour by HVV to get to downtown.
We stayed at the campground from August 21 to August 23, 2026.
We arrived shortly before noon, and our reserved site was available. We had to pay an additional €15 to access the site because check-in isn’t... allowed until 2:00 p.m.
I’ve never experienced such a rip-off.
A little tact would certainly have been appropriate here.
But since this campground has hardly any competition in the city or the surrounding area, they can probably afford to treat customers this way.

Room for improvement
At first glance, the campground makes a good impression, but unfortunately, the cleanliness in the washrooms leaves a lot to be desired. The restrooms are okay, but the wash and shower stalls are not. Even though the campground (according to its own statements) primarily accommodates guests just passing... through—who may not care as much about cleanliness—one would expect a higher standard of cleanliness given the rather high price for an overnight stay. If necessary, the cleaning staff should simply be scheduled to clean one more often.

Everything's fine
We had booked a mobile home in Hamburg. Everything was very clean and tidy. Dishes, a coffee maker, a kettle, and kitchen utensils were all provided. The campground itself was pleasantly quiet, and the staff was very friendly.
When you arrive and want to check in at the front desk, you’re supposed to... pull over into the parking lane in front of the campground. This should be better signposted, since otherwise a long line always forms in front of the gate.
All in all, we can recommend this campground :)

Everything's fine
Easy to get to. Good transportation links. Everyone perceives noise differently—for us, it was totally fine. The kitchen could be better equipped, including cooking facilities. It’s just a place to wash dishes. The TV room could have been put to better use, too—for example, as a dining area; it’s big... enough and there’s no time limit. The price was okay, even though we had a spot that offered four times as much space as we needed. In that sense, the site seems to have been designed with RVs and “Corona Riders” in mind—which is fine. A regular tent field would have been enough for us. We were traveling with a high-roof station wagon and a roof tent. 🙂

Hamburg Schnelsen Campground
This campground is perfect for a stopover (we stayed there for three nights). It’s close to the highway exit (you can hear the highway a little).
It’s also a good base for visiting Hamburg, though you should plan on at least a 60- to 90-minute trip by public transit to get to the city center.
